2018 Summer Strength and Skates

2018 Summer Details

Off-Ice: All off-ice sessions will run out of the freshly renovated Hockey Academy training room at ice level. Altru Sports Advantage, powered by EXOS, will run all off-ice workouts. The summer strength and conditioning program will be a comprehensive program specifically tailored to maximize the athletic development of each athlete.

  • Testing- Athletes will be tested at the beginning and end of the program using EXOS' Performance Quotient testing system. This testing system provides a comprehensive view of each athlete and takes into consideration all of the areas that are required for an athlete to be successful. From a physical standpoint, athlete's lower body output will be tested through three different vertical jumps. These jumps will help us determine weaknesses in power and elasticity and further target our training to each individual athlete. Athletes will be tested in the 5/0/5 agility test and the 10yd. sprint. These two tests provide a great profile of an athlete's ability to accelerate as well as change direction, two important components for a hockey player. Finally, each athlete will test lower body maximal strength using the trap-bar deadlift and upper body maximal strength using the barbell bench press. At the end of the 11 week program, each athlete will be provided a packet with their testing results.
  • Training- All athletes enrolled in the summer programming will train off-ice four days per week. This complete program will address all areas necessary to produce a better athlete and a better hockey player. This includes: mobility, stability, strength, power, endurance, elasticity, conditioning, and recovery. The program is tiered over the course of the summer, with each phase building on the previous one.. This program will challenge athletes physically and is not intended to be a program for beginners. Athletes should prepare to be pushed for a full 60 minute workout each day.

On-Ice: All on-ice sessions will run through the Hockey Academy staff. Other coaching members will include junior and professional coaches from various leagues. Players will be challenged in skill progressions, game reads, and other game-translatable situations. Our focus for the on-ice portion for the summer will be on two separate pieces of the puzzle, skills and development. Players will need to master the skills within a pattern in order to use that skill effectively.

Guest Coaches
Max Markowitz-Assistant Coach, Jacksonville IceMen (ECHL)
Eli Rosendahl-Assistant Coach, Fargo Force (USHL)
Pierre Lamoureux-Associate Head Coach, Fargo Force (USHL)
Karl Goehring-Goaltending Coach, Syracuse Crunch (AHL)
Matt Smaby-Student-Assistant Coach, University of North Dakota (NCAA)

  • Skills- Players will be challenged in different skill drills and will be expected to master these skills by the end of summer. We will put players in different edgework situations, handling pucks in different areas of their body, shooting pucks from various points on the ice, receiving passes from different angles, and many other skill concepts.
  • Development- Once players have mastered the skill progression, we will teach them how and when to use a specific skill blend within a game situation. With the use of video, players will learn pattern recognition, when to possess pucks, putting teammates in areas for success, timing, and many other areas associated with understanding the game of hockey and working on "hockey smarts".
